Transfer/Cancellation Policy:
Due to the number of race transfer requests and cancellations that occur in the weeks prior to a race we have implemented the following policy that is in accordance with USAT Policy.  This policy has been created in fairness to all the athletes so that equal opportunity exists for registering for the event.  There are no race day registrations or race transfers on race day, even if a registered athlete is a "no show" and a slot is available.  This policy has been implemented in fairness to all other athletes who registered for the event to ensure that events start on time, for safety considerations and event management.

A 50% refund is available until August 23.  After August 23, refunds will not be issued after a registration has taken place.  The fee to transfer a registration to another racer is $20 and must be received by August 30.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
1.  How do I become a USAT member?  How much does it cost?
To apply for USAT membership, call USAT at 719-597-9090 ext. 107, and for complete USAT information visit their website at www.usatriathlon.org.  Cost of annual membership is $39.

2.  Why am I required to either be a member of USAT or pay a one-day license fee of $10?

USA Triathlon sanctioned races go through a strict risk-management review process and are considered very safe.  If there is an accident, USAT carries insurance that extends protection to both the race director and the athletes.  This fee is necessary in order to provide a high level of safety and the protection offered through excess medical coverage.

3.  What will the water temperatures be on race day?
Expected water temperature is between 75 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit.  Of course, seasonal factors can affect the water temperature, but the temperatures should not vary by more than a few degrees.

4.  What is a relay team?
A relay team consists of 2-3 individuals who compete in the triathlon by working together as a team.  The team assigns persons to compete in a leg or legs of the event.  For example, one team member completes the swim course and then removes the ankle band with the timing chip and passes it to the next team member at the transition area.  This next team member will strap the "Velcro" ankle band around their ankle and proceed with the bike leg of the course.  When they return to the transition area, the ankle band is again exchanged to the team member who will complete the run portion of the race.  This team member now completes the run course and the finish time is the team's finish time.  The team members can split up the different course leg assignments in any manner they wish.  One person could complete the swim and bike and then transfer the ankle band to the next team member to complete the run.  Or, one person could complete the swim, transfer the ankle band to the next member who will complete the bike and the run.  Or a final scenario, one person could complete the swim, transfer the ankle band to the next member who will complete the bike, and then transfer the ankle band back to the same member who completed the swim, who will then complete the run.  There are three different team categories eligible for awards:  Male Team, Female Team, and Mixed Team.

5.  Where can I find the USA Triathlon Rules so I can review them and familiarize myself with them?
The rule book is available for viewing at www.usatriathlon.org under Rule Book.  Or you can request a copy from USAT by writing them at USAT National Office, 3595 E. Fountain Blvd., Suite F-1, Colorado Springs, CO 80910.

6.  Where do I place my bike and gear at the race for use during the competition?
These items are placed in the transition area which will require your race number in order to enter.  Your location within the transition area will be assigned by your race number.

7.  What do most triathletes use for footwear on the bike?  Do they use their running shoes with straps on the pedals or do they use clip-on bike shoes?
Most competitors use clip-on shoes which they attach to the pedals before the race begins.  Then all they have to do to transition from the swim to the bike is put on their helmet and grab their bike.  They get on the bike and after picking up some speed, slip their feet into their shoes.  One good technique is to use rubber bands through the loop on the heels of the shoes and then connect the rubber bands on the bike framework to keep the shoes upright on the pedals and parallel to the ground.  This prevents the pedals from rotating straight up and down and possibly having the shoe disconnect from the pedal. After the triathlete has his/her feet placed into the shoes, he/she can simply reach down and break off the rubber bands.  Upon completing the bike course the strategy is to remove your feet from the shoes and place them on top of the shoes while still riding the bike in order to still be able to pedal.  Then the triathlete simply dismounts the bike and returns the bike to their assigned location in the transition area.  Some triathletes prefer to wear their running shoes so they don't have to change shoes after completing the bike course.  It is simply an individual's preference.

8.  How does the race start?
The swim is the first event and competitors will be assigned a color coded swim cap by their estimated 500 yard swim time or age group.  The swim start is conducted in waves by color of swim cap.  Waves are separated by five minutes.  If you start the race in the second wave, subtract five minutes from the race clock at the finish to obtain your total time.  Since you will cross over a timing mat at the start and finish of the swim, your “chip time” will be accurate.  It is important to arrive in time to complete race check-in, get situated in the transition area, warm up, familiarize yourself with the different aspects of the course, and get prepared for the race start.  Races begin at 8:00 a.m.

9.  What is Clydesdale and Athena?
The Clydesdale division is for male competitors weighing over 200 lbs.  The Athena division is for female competitors weighing over 150 lbs.

10.  What does the USAT Rulebook state regarding the use of wetsuits?
Each age group participant shall be permitted to wear a wet suit without penalty in any event sanctioned by USA Triathlon up to and including a water temperature of 78 degrees Fahrenheit. When the water temperature is greater than 78 degrees, but less than 84 degrees Fahrenheit, age group participants may wear a wet suit at their own discretion, provided however that participants who wear a wet suit within this temperature range shall not be eligible for prizes or awards. Age group participants shall not wear wet suits in water temperatures equal to or greater than 84 degrees Fahrenheit. The wetsuit policy for elite athletes shall be determined by the USAT Athletes Advisory Council.
